For college athletes, Media Day is one of the most exciting times of the year. They put on their UNCP gear, line up with props, and prepare to kick off the season. Behind the camera lens is Gabe Blackwelder — a humble and quiet track team member, many don’t realize is one of the most accomplished athletes on campus.
Blackwelder didn’t start his track career until later in high school, but it didn’t take long for him to fall in love with the sport. Inspired by his father, Nathan, an ultra-marathon runner, Blackwelder quickly turned his newfound interest into a passion, eventually leading him to UNCP.
Blackwelder specializes in mid-distance running, focusing on the 800- and 1500-meter events. He dedicates countless hours to training and has proven his dedication to sports and academics. One of his proudest accomplishments is earning the Elite 23 Award for the 2024-2025 indoor track season — an honor given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA among competitors in each sport.
Blackwelder’s weekly routine includes running up to 65 miles, weight training and weekend practices. But it’s not only the competition that drives him — it’s the strong relationships he’s built with his teammates. “The team culture is amazing,” Blackwelder recalls. “That’s what sold me on coming to UNCP.”
Coach Peter Ormsby was among the first to recruit Blackwelder and became a mentor beyond athletics. The guidance Blackwelder received from Ormsby and his teammates helped him find balance in his life as a student-athlete. Majoring in exercise science with a minor in psychology and health promotion, he learned to manage his time and hold himself accountable.
Blackwelder focuses on more than his success — he gives back by interning as an assistant coach at his high school, where he helps younger athletes with injury prevention and muscle recovery. He also serves as vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and volunteers as a photographer for the school’s athletic media department.
Looking Ahead
As graduation approaches, Blackwelder is exploring a career in coaching and considering certification in exercise physiology. One thing’s for sure — running will always be part of his life. He’s already setting his sights on training for a marathon, driven by the same determination that made him a standout at UNCP.
Reflecting on his journey, Blackwelder said his proudest moment was helping his team win the conference championship during his sophomore year, defying the odds as underdogs. “We pulled it together through hard work,” he said proudly.
Whether on the track, in the classroom or behind the camera, Blackwelder continues to inspire others — proving that true champions are defined by their character and dedication, not just their medals.
Blackwelder’s advice to fellow student-athletes is simple: “Surround yourself with people who hold you accountable. Success is harder when the people around you don’t strive for the best versions of themselves. Find a support system, stay determined and never stop pushing yourself.”
