About
Dr. William Stewart Thomas is a professor, academic scholar, and seasoned administrative leader with over two decades of service at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Since joining the faculty in 2001, he has held pivotal leadership roles including Associate Dean of the College of Business and Economics for over 15 years, Interim Dean of the School of Business for more than a year, Associate Provost for nine months, and Chief Financial Officer and Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration for two years. Dr. Thomas holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology Management and is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in North Carolina.
Before entering academia, Dr. Thomas developed a strong foundation in financial and operational leadership in the private sector. He served as Chief Financial Officer of ZF Meritor in Maxton, North Carolina, and spent ten years with Eaton Corporation in progressively senior roles, including Controller for North American and European operations of the Golf Grip Division, Financial Accounting Manager, and Production Control Manager.
His teaching excellence has been widely recognized, most notably with the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2022—the highest teaching honor in the University of North Carolina System.
From a research perspective, Dr. Thomas is author of one and co-author of two articles published in the Journal of Accountancy and has contributed to several other academic publications. His research interests span enterprise resource management, data analytics, business intelligence, artificial intelligence, and managerial accounting, reflecting his commitment to advancing the intersection of technology and financial strategy in both academic and applied settings.
